The Physicality of an Open Heart

Embracing the principles of yoga and alignment unveils a transformative journey towards cultivating an open heart. A journey on which the wisdom of the body and the serenity of the mind converge. As a yoga teacher and wellbeing and mental fitness coach, I love guiding individuals through this harmonious integration of yogic principles and alignment techniques, to help them flourish both physically and emotionally with wellbeing.

 Yoga, with its ancient roots, offers a profound pathway to an open heart. This practice, rooted in mindfulness and breath awareness, becomes a sacred space where rhythmic inhalations and exhalations synchronize with our hearts’ beating. Through the gentle ebb and flow of yoga poses, we find a dance that encourages openness, inviting the heart to expand both physically and metaphorically. Alignment principles, a cornerstone of my holistic approach, become the compass that guides us through this journey. Within every asana, from Tadasana (Mountain Pose) to Urdhva Dhanurasana and other Heart-Opening Backbends, alignment becomes the key to unlocking the potential for an open heart.

 Proper alignment both ensures physical safety and encourages the free flow of energy, allowing the heart to radiate with vitality. The heart chakra, Anahata, is a focal point in this exploration. Through our practice, we mindfully bring awareness to balanced opening of the front and back (shoulder blade region) of the heart to stimulate this energetic hub. Heart-opening postures like Virabradrasana 1 (Warrior I) and Salamba Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand) become invitations to vulnerability and courage, urging us to release tension and embrace our hearts’ expansive nature. Subtler movements like arm bone rotations and lifting the collar bones help us learn to cue our bodies to maintain open hearts, even during simple, seated postures.

 The synergy between yoga and alignment helps us learn to experience—to embody—the interconnection between physical and emotional aspects of living wholeheartedly. The breath, our constant companion, becomes a bridge between the conscious mind and beating heart. Through breath awareness practices, we learn to cultivate a steady, even breath that nourishes the heart, fostering a sense of calm and resilience.

 Alignment principles extend beyond the mat into our daily lives. How we carry ourselves, both physically and emotionally, influences our heart alignment, our ability to connect with others, and our experiences of joy. Moving through our lives with mindful awareness of standing tall, with an open and balanced heart, enables us to reflect the vastness we aim to cultivate internally .

In the convergence of yoga and alignment principles, we discover a holistic approach to opening our hearts—one that transcends the physical, into the realm of emotional and spiritual wellbeing. In my yoga classes (both online and in person) and workshops, and with coaching clients, I foster a safe environment where individuals can unlock their heart-opening potential, a degree at a time.
